  • Walking Trails
    • Appalachian Trail: forms the southern boundary of Schuylkill County. Access points are numerous and include those roads that travel over the Blue Mountain: Routes 309, 61, 183, and 501.  Since the trail intersects these state routes, you will find convenient parking near the road.  Dogs are welcome and the trail is rocky but sometimes flat giving this trail system a moderate rating.
    • John Bartram Trail: runs from Kernsville Dam in Hamburg to the Schuylkill River in Auburn. It follows the old Pennsylvania Railroad line and will eventually run into Pottsville and points north. Accessing the trail is easy. From Schuylkill County, travel south on Rt. 61 to the light for Cabela’s. Turn left at this light to drive by the Cracker Barrel Restaurant. Pass this restaurant, cross railroad tracks and turn left onto Kernsville Dam Road. Drive a very short distance to see the trail parking lot on your right. The trail begins on the left and features a very nice surface and is dog friendly but please pickup after your pooch. Flat and easy trail.
    • Historic Tow Path Trail: is located in scenic Port Clinton along the Schuylkill River. The trail follows the riverbank and moves through several locks. Be sure to find the hook on a flat rock that moored the canal boats. Access is from the playground off Broad Street. Flat and easy trail that is dog friendly.
    • Bear Creek Environmental Area: is located within the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds in Summit Station. Though the gates are closed, you can park along Rt. 895 at the gate entrance or in a lot near the horse ring that you can see along the road. Trails are easy to moderate but very pretty. Please pick up after your dog.
    • Frog Hollow Environmental Education Center: located near Friedensburg off Rt. 443. Turn right after the village post office and stop at the stop sign. Go straight through this sign onto Stone Mountain Road. You will see Frog Hollow and its parking lot on the right after about ¾ mile. All trails are flat and loop back and dogs are welcome if kept on a leash. << read more >>
