Berks County's hiking community leaves trail of happiness, camaraderie
By Jennifer Hetrick, Reading Eagle correspondent
To those who know the powerful impact of quick-footed steps in the fresh air of outdoors, hiking makes sense as easily as the norms of eating and breathing. And thankfully, the hiking community in Berks County is a strong one. With a history dating back to the 1920s, the Berks Community Hiking Club is leading a three-mile, full-moon hike Friday night - a great way to dive into the weekend in the dark with a bit of illumination from the evening sky - after meeting at the fire tower near the Pagoda on Mount Penn at 7:30.This rare opportunity of following a weekend full-moon hike is free and welcome to anyone who decides to make their way up the mountain.Known for its Saturday hikes, BCHC has about 200 members and also includes subgroups known as Berks County Wanderers and Berks Community Strollers.
...BMECC's members sometimes follow hikes hosted by Schuylkill On The Move sponsored by Schuylkill Vision, an initiative to promote healthy living and appreciation of culture in the county.SOTM is known to mingle educational components into their hikes, often in Port Clinton, Schuylkill County, just over the line from the Berks border.
