My mom was an early elementary school teacher so I am familiar with Shel Silverstein...the quirky children's poet of Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic. So when I saw a notice for "An ADULT Evening of Shel Silverstein" I thought perhaps it was a typo -- or another Shel Silverstein. Turns out it's the same man, just a different side of his personality and creativity. Online, some of the evening (it's a combination of ten one act plays) has been described as "raunchy", "grown-up craziness" and "hard-knock endings". But the idea of seeing such a completely different side of such a clever writer is very intriguing. We'll all have that opportunity on Friday, Feb. 17 and Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Theatre at Simon Kramer (15 Alliance Street, New Philadelphia). The performance will be by The Actors Guild of Schuylkill County and the $10 tickets can be purchased at the door (cash only) or on the Actors Guild website (credit card payment). They are not kidding about the ADULT evening -- tickets are for those ages 18 and older.
The Majestic Theatre also has two events the same weekend. They will be hosting their FREE movie night on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. and entrance includes a bag of popcorn (drinks and candy will be for sale). This month's movie is The BFG (The Big Friendly Giant). then on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. they will be hosting Artists in Motion Performing Arts with A Night of Singing and Dancing. Tickets are just $10 and can be purchased at the door or by contacting the theatre at 570-628-4647.
