Years ago my young daughters and I almost got thrown out of the Smithsonian! We were in the American Art Museum and, as I was tending to one daughter, another became fascinated with a painting of flowers. The paint was very thick and "clumpy" and made the flowers appear almost three dimensional. She had a fascinated look in her eyes and she reached out...to point at the flowers I thought. But she touched them! A painting (by a famous artist and perhaps priceless) hanging in a museum! A guard swooped down on us instantly and delivered his "no touching" speech. Mortified, we decided the Air and Space Museum was more our speed -- at least there the planes are hanging from the ceiling and out of a seven year old's reach.
I see that same fascinated gleam in my husband's eyes but not at museums...at car shows. Sometimes it's an engine, sometimes a shining hubcap, sometimes a hood ornament. If the owners weren't shadowing him closely, I'm sure he would eagerly jump into the driver's seat or go over the engine with a fine tooth comb. But he has to satisfy himself with, as the museum guard told my daughters so many years ago, "looking only with your eyes".
