Cold weather have you feeling blue? Stop hiding indoors and instead embrace the winter season with the Fire and Ice Winter Fest at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park on Sunday, January 24 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Bundle up for the hot dogs over an open fire, possible ice skating (depends on the thickness of the ice) and winter water rescue demonstration by the dive team. Then head inside the clubhouse to warm up while you meet Smokey the Bear, get your face painted (small fee), request a balloon animal from Splash the clown and watch a musical performance by Jesse Ward (2 p.m.). Then, when you're starting to warm up, you can try your hand and making (and tasting) homemade ice cream. And save the warmest event for last -- the Fire Hot Chili Cook-Off. If you'd like to add your chili to the contest, contact Susan at 570-624-3018.
Sweet Arrow Lake County Park is also sponsoring a free program on Wednesday, January 20 (snow date Jan. 22) at 7 p.m. Scott Weidensaul, author of more than a dozen books on natural history, will present "Owls: Soul of the Night". If you prefer animals without wings, add Groundhog Day (Tuesday, February 2) to your calendar. Sweet Arrow Lake will make the big groundhog announcement at 9 a.m. followed by Pennsylvania Dutch songs and stories, musical entertainment and an auction. You can also enjoy breakfast beginning at 7:30 a.m. -- $6 for adults and $4 for children. Breakfast will be cancelled if there is a blizzard but everything else will go on -- after all Groundhog Day is Feb. 2, not the 3rd or 4th.
