Right now, hiking and fishing might seem like they are ages away but Spring is right around the corner so why not take a peek at what's coming for hikers and fishers. You might not be able to fish right now -- unless you enjoy that unusual version of fishing known as ice fishing. So why not take the winter to enhance your fly fishing skills. Schuylkill County Trout Unlimited is teaching two classes. First, at the Schuylkill Haven Rec/Senior Center, 340 Haven Street will be offering fly casting, spin casting and fly tying classes (they'll supply the needed equipment) on Sunday, Feb. 21 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Classes are free but space is limited so register today! Contact Haven Rec here. If Feb. 28 isn't good for you how about Sunday, February 28 at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park? The fly tying class will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. but you must register by calling 717-979-0235.
The weather might not cooperate for a long hike in the forest but there are a few mini-hikes scheduled throughout the area. So grab your hat and mittens. Perhaps one will help you escape from cabin fever!
Sunday, February 14 -- The Shenandoah Shuffle will meet at Rotary Way on the Shenandoah Valley School District campus on West Centre Street. Led by John Domalakes, this 2 mile and easy rated hike will take place between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
Sunday, February 21 -- The Tree-mendous Winter Tree ID Trek will meet at the large pavilion (near the clubhouse) at Sweet Arrow Lake County Park. Led by Frank Snyder, the hike will begin at 2 p.m. Each hiker will receive a copy of "Common Trees of Pennsylvania" so you can work on identifying trees even without their telltale leaves, flowers and buds.
Saturday, February 27 -- The Cabin Fever Walk will meet at the Waterfall Road parking lot of Sweet Arrow Lake County Park. Led by Porcupine Pat, this 3 mile and moderate rated hike will take place between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
