My grocery store's weekly flyer is in the Republican Herald tomorrow. That's a big day in my house because I try to determine how to use store sales and coupons I cut out of the Sunday paper to get the most bang for my buck! But this week I'll be doing a little extra shopping.
Remember back in November and December when it seemed like every organization was having a holiday food drive? Bet you haven't heard much about food drives lately. According the Feeding America, a network of food banks, over 42 million Americans live in food-insecure households, including 13 million children. And, as winter drags on, the holiday donations are running out.
So why not check the weekly flyer for your store and do a little extra shopping this week? The Minersville Area Food Drive Committee is accepting donations (non-perishable food and monetary donations) until February 28. Call 570-544-2739 for more information about the drive or dropping off donations. Monetary donations can be sent to: Minersville Area Food Drive Committee, 529 Lytle Street, Minersville, PA 17954.
If you're donating non-perishable food here are three tips and a list of most needed items.
1. Canned goods with pop tops are better than those that need a can opener.
2. Avoid those packaged in glass bottles.
3. If you're shopping in your pantry, check expiration dates.
