I am not musical. I do not play an instrument. I only sing in church when there are enough people to drown out the sound of my voice (trust me -- it's better that way). According to my husband, who has been pushing me around the dance floor for 26 years, I do not hear the beat. So I'll have to give credit for daughters who sang in their school choirs and a son who plays percussion to my husband.
Right now my son is in the marching band, the school concerts and the occasional music festival. But he aspires to the high school jazz group. For more classical music students, Schuylkill County offers an incredible opportunity. The Gabriel Youth Orchestra is for musicians in grades 7 through 12 (grade 5 for string players) who play string, wind, brass or percussion. If you know a young musician don't let them miss out on the chance.
On Wednesday, September 21 the GYO is holding open auditions at the DHH Lengel Middle School auditorium from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. It's a chance for students to "try on" the orchestra experience and decide if it is for them. If the answer is Yes they can pick up additional information about the GYO experience including how to audition, when rehearsals are and when the performances are.
If you'd like to enjoy this incredible experience, the experiences are:
Sunday, December 18 at the DHH Lengel Middle School auditorium
Sunday, April 30 at DHH Lengel Middle School auditorium
They also perform for an audience made up of students in Grade 4 throughout the county on Friday, December 16.
