My son is anxiously counting the days until the end of school. He can't imagine he's going to pack so much fun into just three months. Sadly, some parents are counting the days until the end of school with a different kind of anxiety. They can't imagine how they'll provide healthy meals for their children without the help of free school lunches. Just in time, our letter carriers are working to replenish the pantries of local food banks. This Saturday, May 13 will be the 25th Annual Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. In addition to your letters and packages, letter carriers will be picking up bags of nonperishable food. All collected foods will be donated to local food pantries. Please place your donation in a bag. Some suggestions are: cereal, pasta, spaghetti sauce, rice, juice, peanut butter and canned foods (fruit, vegetables, tuna, beans). It's easy to throw a few extra items in your cart when you visit the grocery store this week. For more information contact Pam Donato at firstname.lastname@example.org or 202-662-2489.
While we're on the subject of summer, start thinking like a tourist. It's a great way to discover fun and surprisingly affordable things to do in the county this summer. You can get a great head start by visiting the Tourism Expo at the Fairlane Village Mall on Saturday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Chances are you'll find something you want to experience among the exhibitors ranging from wineries to historical sites to outdoor activities to festivals and celebrations. Don't limit your summer vacation to one week at the beach -- you can find plenty of things to enjoy all summer long right here.
