National Drug Take-Back Day

4/22/2018

t How was your weekend? Mine was SO tremendous. It's finally feeling like Spring! If you decided to do a little Spring cleaning you might want to start with your medicine cabinet (ironically one of the worst places to store medications because of humidity and temperature changes in the bathroom). But, wherever you store your medication take some time this week to look over all your bottles and containers to determine what is out-of-date or just leftover. This Saturday, April 28 is National Drug Take-Back Day.  There are so many reasons to week through your medications.
  1. Outdated medications can lose their potency or become more potent, neither a good thing.
  2. When you have old medications hanging around you may be tempted to self-diagnose or use medications prescribed to another family member.
  3. With the opioid epidemic you don't want to have anything that a person struggling with a drug problem might be tempted to take.
The Schuylkill County sheriff will be collecting prescription pills between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the following locations:
  • Ashland Police Department, 401 S. 18th Street
  • Butler Township Police Department, 211 Broad Street, Ashland
  • Cass Township Police Department, 1209 Valley Road, Duncott
  • Coaldale Police Department, 221-223 Third Street
  • St. Luke's Hospital-Miners Campus, 36 W. Ruddle Street, Coaldale
  • Rush Township Police Department, 104 Mahanoy Avenue

The CDAAST is one of the most comprehensive screening tools for drug and/or alcohol abuse. This is a 150-item self-report scale that consists of items that parallel instruments such as the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) and the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST). The (CDAAST) has "exhibited valid psychometric properties" and has been found to be "a sensitive screening instrument for the abuse of drugs and/or alcohol.
