Block of Art
- The Block of Art began in 2007 as a grass roots effort to bring an arts event to downtown Pottsville, a historic town in eastern Pennsylvania, about two hours northwest of Philadelphia.
- Block of Art 2018 was a three day festival in historic downtown Pottsville, Pennsylvania. All Friday and Saturday events were free and open to the public. BOA opened on Friday night with greetings from the mayor, a county commissioner and our state representative. There was a performance by a youth dance group and a big band dance at a local hotel.
We had a special children’s art experience where they could engage with artists to create their own art. Ibiyinka Alao, Nigerian Art Ambassador to the UN, was there to share his art with them and was greatly appreciated. In the same space at the hotel we had 4 performances for the children including the Schuylkill Ballet Company , the Actors’ Guild of Schuylkill County, another theatre group and Spotlight Kidz.
One of the goals of BOA is to enhance the economics of downtown Pottsville. We had a scavenger hunt that lead participants into 13 businesses to get the things they needed to complete the hunt. Art was hung in all these businesses.
On Sunday we invited people to experience the culinary art of downtown with 2 special events at 2 downtown restaurants.
- One important opportunity has come to us over the summer of 2018 in the form of an invitation to be one of Pottsville’s five premier events for 2019. We are working with the town’s revitalization group to increase attendance downtown next year for the event. Such additions as train excursions to the event are being considered to increase attendance beyond our local region.
