Healthy Schuylkill Communities
Healthy Schuylkill Communities were started in response to a Lehigh Valley Health Network's Community Health Assessment that found poor nutrition choices and lack of exercise were important issues to address in the county.
It has expanded from continued work in the 3 established communities, Mahanoy City, Shenandoah, and Schuylkill Haven; to providing health and wellness programming/education in communities across Schuylkill County and on Social Media.
Recently, a "Strategic Partner", Schuylkill on the Move, has been added as a VISION program and addresses walking in these communities.
Our Communities:
Mahanoy City
Healthy Mahanoy City is a group of residents who are working toward getting more people in the city up and active. Walking is one of the best ways to get exercise. There are dozens of health benefits even for those doing short walks. We were fortunate to work with Walk Works, a program from the University of Pittsburgh and the PA Department of Health to start walking groups in the spring of 2016. We are currently working with the schools, with seniors and those who just want to get exercise that will make them healthier.
Mahanoy Community Garden- A 30 raised bed community garden was started in 2017 with many local residents and families growing their own fresh fruits and vegetables. The beds are planted from May - October each year for a cost of $5 per raised bed (4' x 9' size)- senior citizens, first responders and veterans are free of charge. We offer community gardening education as well as support and comradery at the garden. Please consider planting with us in the upcoming planting season.
Volunteers are always appreciated to help maintain our garden and assist our senior gardeners.
Please check the Healthy Mahanoy Facebook page for events and current news.
If you are interested in becoming a part of Healthy Mahanoy City we would love to have you on board. Please contact 570-622-6097 for more information.
Schuylkill Haven
Schuylkill Haven was the first Health Schuylkill community. Since 2013 a dedicated coalition of community organizations and individuals have created evidence-based programs to improve the health of the community. The theme is to make the healthy choice, the easy choice.
Some of the programs include health fairs, historic and farm hikes, cooking classes, workshops and other events. In addition there has been a community walking challenge each year.
Schuylkill Haven will be the next community to construct a Community Garden. Coming in the Spring 2019 we will be working with local residents to construct a raised bed garden in Bubeck Park. This garden will support local gardeners, a local food bank, and employees of Evans Network. We will be holding community meetings to listen to local residents' ideas for the garden. For more information about the Schuylkill Haven Community Garden please call 570-622-6097.
Volunteers are welcome to help maintain the garden and to tend to the raised beds intended for the food pantry.

Shenandoah
Healthy Shenandoah is a group of local residents that are working together to build a culture of health in Shenandoah. They believe that walking and eating well can make a difference in peoples’ lives and they are dedicated to making it easier for Shenandoah to be healthy.
Walking is a simple affordable way for people to get exercise. Healthy Shenandoah worked with the University of Pittsburgh’s and the PA Department of Health’s Work Works program to start walking groups for all ages in town. These groups will be open to all interested. Please call 570-622-6097 to learn more about the groups.
Healthy eating is other focus. Healthy lifestyle and eating informational sessions are held monthly in the Diakon Senior Center for interested residents.
Shenandoah’s parks will soon be looking better due to the efforts of Healthy Shenandoah and great community partners. Parks are a great place to get out and enjoy friends, family and fresh air. Healthy Shenandoah has been able to refurbish 3 parks in Shenandoah with the help of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Action Award encouraging a Culture of Health and BB&T Bank's Lighthouse Project.
Safe Trunk or Treat is organized by Healthy Shenandoah on Halloween Trick or Treat night in the borough. Residents open their decorated car trunks or truck beds to offer a safe Halloween experience to the youngsters in town. Locations of the Safe Trunk or Treat include Shenandoah Manor Nursing Center, the Rite Aid Parking lot and the Shenandoah Valley Elementary School.
Healthy Shenandoah hosts an annual Health Fair at Shenandoah Manor Nursing Center in early April. This health fair brings information and providers to the people of Shenandoah to improve their health and wellbeing.
