Healthy Schuylkill Communities
Healthy Schuylkill Communities mission is to increase access/consumption of healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity. This is a partnership with Lehigh Valley Healthy Network-Schuylkill in response to its Community Health Assessment that found poor nutrition choices and lack of exercise were important issues to address in the county.
HSC provides health and wellness programming/education in communities across Schuylkill County and online. Additionally, works with existing committees in Mahanoy City, Shenandoah, and Schuylkill Haven.
Countywide initiatives include Schuylkill on the Move, GooseChase, and Healthy Schuylkill Youth.
Our Communities:
Mahanoy City
Healthy Mahanoy City is working towards getting more people in the city eating healthy foods and up and active. Walking is one of the best ways to get exercise. There are dozens of health benefits even for those doing short walks. We were fortunate to work with PA Walk Works, a program from the Pennsylvania Downtown Center and the PA Department of Health to create walking routes and start walking groups in the spring of 2016. We are currently working with communities to increase physical activity infrastructure to make them healthy choice the easy choice.
The Mahanoy Community Garden, a 30 raised-bed community garden, was started in 2017 with many local residents and families growing their own fresh fruits and vegetables. The beds are planted from May - October each year for a cost of $7.50 per raised-bed (4' x 9' size)- senior citizens, first responders and veterans are free of charge. To register contact the borough office.
We offer connecting gardeners with opportunities for gardening education as well as support and camaraderie at the garden. Please consider planting with us in the upcoming planting season!
Volunteers are always appreciated to help maintain our garden and assist our senior gardeners.
Please check the Healthy Mahanoy Facebook page for events and current news.
If you are interested in becoming a part of Healthy Mahanoy City, we would love to have you on board. Please contact 570-622-6097 for more information.
Schuylkill Haven
Schuylkill Haven was the first Health Schuylkill community. Since 2013 a dedicated coalition of community organizations and individuals have created evidence-based programs to improve the health of the community. The theme is to make the healthy choice, the easy choice.
Some of the programs include health fairs, historic and farm hikes, cooking classes, workshops and other events. In addition, there has been a community walking challenge each year.
Schuylkill Haven also developed a community garden. Established in the Spring 2019, many local residents and families have been able to grow their own fresh fruits, vegetables, and other plants in Bubeck Park. The beds are planted from May - October each year for a cost of $10 per raised-bed (4' x 9' size)- senior citizens, first responders and veterans are free of charge. We offer community gardening education as well as support and camaraderie at the garden. This garden supports local gardeners, a local food bank, and employees of Evans Network. Please consider planting with us in the upcoming season!
In 2024 VISION worked with the borough of Schuylkill Haven to transfer the management of the community garden to the Recreation Department. For more information about the Schuylkill Haven Community Garden please contact Schuylkill Haven Recreation Department.
Volunteers are welcome to help maintain the garden and to tend to the raised beds intended for the food pantry.
